Student/Teacher Cards

The Silent Observer
is silently engaged in class discussions and activities.  He or she watches and listens intently but is reserved when it comes to volunteering ideas and sharing thoughts.

The Participant
, like the Silent Observer, is fully engaged in class discussions and activities.  The Participant takes risks by volunteering ideas and sharing his or her thoughts.

The Distractor
engages in behavior which pulls his or her classmates’, as well as the teacher’s, attention away from class activities.

The Absent Student is physically present in class but his or her thoughts and attention lie elsewhere.

The Disciplinarian
is a teacher who uses punishment to enforce order in the classroom.

The Facilitator is a teacher who provides structure and guidance but allows students to take responsibility for their learning experience.

About These Cards

Some years after taking a Soul Collage workshop, I created these cards for a lesson I developed on classroom dynamics. The activity helps students develop an awareness of how the behavior of students and teachers affects the learning environment.
